We love our overseas manufacturers, but we've always wanted to try making something here. So we did it! The Maverick Alpha is proudly made in the USA. And, we've got to say, it feels good supporting local businesses while creating rad gear for ultralight enthusiasts.
Premium Alpha Direct Fabric
If you know, you know—Polartec Alpha Direct is hard to come by. We secured a big batch of Forest Green in 90 GSM, along with limited runs of 60 and 120 GSM in select colors.
Originally developed in 2012 for the U.S. Military, Polartec Alpha Direct is the ultimate active insulation—warm when you need it, breathable when you don’t.

Lightweight and breathable! It’s just perfect for a chilly run or hike! And flamingo pink! My favorite color but I’m going to need more than one! I’ve used it for several morning runs, I love how the air flows through the fabric yet it keeps you warm enough!

These are really unique pieces that provide surprising amount of warmth for how lightweight and breathable they are—lightweight as in featherweight even in the “midweight” level of the alpha, and breathable as in air goes right through them. YET, as a mid layer, they trap body heat, let moisture flow through flawlessly, and add add nothing to the overall weight of your layering system. I had to wear them each several times before I felt like I could even comment somewhat coherently. They do run big compared to the regular Squak hoodie perhaps due to the open nature of the fabric, and I wish I’d have ordered the smaller size because I think the coziness would be enhanced by a closer fit. It also loosens up a bit over the course of several hours especially if it’s used as an outer garment which makes me fairly nervous about catching it on something and having it tear. With this open fabric, there is no sun protection, so if you’re cognizant of UV protection, another layer coupled with the Alpha Squak is mandatory. I love the warmth of the hood—zero sweat issue even when layered beneath a hardshell with hood, and it slides over a Buff or similar base layer of head protection. I also am very grateful the sleeves are as long as they are—I LOVE pulling my hands up inside the sleeve when I need that bit of extra hand warmer ability. I’m not sure the ultralight version adds enough value to my gear stash as compared to the “midweight” alpha, but I will find excellent uses for both pieces.
